Abstract: Dominant theories of vagueness argue against the consistency of tolerance principles – such as “anyone who is 1cm shorter than a tall man is tall, too” – on the basis that these principles generate sorites paradoxes. In reaction, there are two recent comprehensive works on how to save tolerance from paradox: Zardini (2008) and van Rooij (2010). We argue that neither theory succeeds. Both theories are based on model-theoretic semantics and in all model-theoretic semantics there exists a sharp boundary for predicates which entails that the relevant tolerance principles are not true. That is, the meaning assigned to tolerance in neither theory is the same as the intuitive intended meaning of tolerance. We conclude that in order to save tolerance from paradox a more radical deviation from classical semantics is required. We close the session with some general considerations about the nature of a meaning theory of tolerance
